Note: If your phone system requires
that you dial an access code (9, for
example) before you dial an outside
number, do not press the access
code, either.
If you use two single-line jacks, you
must connect the lines with an optional
two-line coupler (such as RadioShack
Cat. No. 279-401).
If the dial tone stops, you have
touch-tone service. Leave TONE–
PULSE set to TONE.
If the dial tone continues, you have
pulse service. Set TONE–PULSE to
PULSE.

other line.
Setting the Dialing Mode
Note: If you have tone service on one
line and pulse service on the other, you
must set TONE–PULSE to the right set-
ting each time you make a call on a dif-
ferent line. The setting does not matter
when you answer a call, however.
Set TONE–PULSE for the type of service
you have. If you are not sure which type
you have, do this simple test.
1. Be sure TONE–PULSE is set to
TONE.
Confirming the Line Numbers
Follow these steps to determine which
phone number is connected to which
line.
1. Be sure TONE–PULSE is set cor-
rectly.

OPERATION
3. Dial one of your phone numbers. If
the Line 2 indicator flashes, the
number is connected to Line 2. If
you hear a busy signal, the number
is connected to Line 1.
To place a call, press the line button for
an available line and lift the handset.
When you hear a dial tone, dial the num-
ber.
When you receive a call, that line’s indi-
cator flashes. To answer a call, press
the line button (LINE 1 or LINE 2) below
the flashing line indicator and lift the
handset. The line indicator turns off.
After you confirm the phone number for
each line, write the numbers on the
number plate above the keypad. Use a
paper clip to lift off the plate’s plastic
cover. Use a pencil to write the numbers
in case the numbers change.
Line Indicator
The ring for Line 1 has a lower pitch
than the ring for Line 2. This helps you
tell which line is ringing.
To end a call, hang up the handset.
Setting the Ringer Volume
To adjust the ringer volume, set RINGER

Set the handset volume switch in the
center of the handset to the desired lev-
el (LO, MED, or HI).

If you do not want the ringer to sound,
set RINGER to OFF. You can still make
and answer calls if you hear another
phone on the same phone line ring or if
you see a line indicator flashing.

CARE AND MAINTENANCE
Your RadioShack ET-651 Two-Line Desk Phone is an example of superior design
and craftsmanship. The following suggestions will help you care for your ET-651 so
you can enjoy it for years.
Keep the ET-651 dry. If it gets wet, wipe it dry immediately. Liquids
might contain minerals that can corrode the electronic circuits.
Use and store the ET-651 only in normal temperature environments.
Temperature extremes can shorten the life of electronic devices, and
distort or melt plastic parts.
Keep the ET-651 away from dust and dirt, which can cause premature
wear of parts.
Handle the ET-651 gently and carefully. Dropping it can damage circuit
boards and cases and can cause the ET-651 to work improperly.
Wipe the ET-651 with a damp cloth occasionally to keep it looking new.
Do not use harsh chemicals, cleaning solvents, or strong detergents to
clean the ET-651.
Modifying or tampering with the ET-651’s internal components can cause a malfunc-
tion and might invalidate its warranty. If your ET-651 is not performing as it should,
take it to your local RadioShack store for assistance. If the trouble is affecting the tele-
phone lines, the phone company can ask you to disconnect your ET-651 until you have
resolved the problem.

The FCC Wants You To Know
Lightning
In the unlikely event that your phone
causes problems on the phone line, the
phone company can temporarily discon-
tinue your service. If this happens, the
phone company attempts to notify you in
advance. If advance notice is not practi-
cal, the phone company notifies you as
soon as possible and advises you of
your right to file a complaint with the
FCC.
Your telephone has built-in protection
circuits to reduce the risk of damage
from surges in telephone line and power
line current. These protection circuits
meet or exceed the FCC requirements.
However, lightning striking the tele-
phone or power lines can damage your
telephone.
Lightning damage is not common. Nev-
ertheless, if you live in an area that has
severe electrical storms, we suggest
that you unplug your phone during
storms to reduce the possibility of dam-
age.
Also, the phone company can make
changes to its lines, equipment, opera-
tions, or procedures that could affect the
operation of this telephone. The tele-
phone company notifies you of these
changes in advance, so you can take
the necessary steps to prevent interrup-
tion of your telephone service.
